Römische Alterthümer : lecture notes, 1828-1829.

Bound volume of notes taken by Ernst von Leutsch at Georg Ludolf Dissen's lectures on Roman antiquities (Römische Alterthümer), at the University of Göttingen, in the winter semester 1828-1829. After a general introduction about basic concepts, sources, and study aids, the lectures are divided into two major parts, on public antiquities (p.36-420) and private antiquities (p. 421-451). The notes are written with wide margins that are used for bibliographical references, or other notations. Part 1 of the lectures concerns aspects of Roman public life, including government, finance, judiciary, religion and military. This part of the notes includes at the end a separate section (p. 384-420), the beginning of which seems to be marked off with a notation indicating the end of the lectures proper (Ende der römischen Alterthümer) written between border lines; there follow additional notes that refer back to topics covered in the lectures, with reference by page number to Leutsch's own manuscript, suggesting that these notes may relate to his review or additional study. The additional notes concern only the last part of those lectures (manuscript p. 290 on), covering religion and military; one passage (p. 410-418) is under the heading: Kurzer Ueberblick des Kriegswesens der Römer bis auf die Kaiser. Part 2, on private antiquities, begins with a section on the concept of the Roman citizen, followed by discussions of dwellings, clothing, and funerary customs. At the back of the volume is a detailed table of contents (p. 453-455), including page numbers.
